Childhood
Tyrone Kaimone Frampton was born on December 18, 1994, in Northampton, UK. His father was white, and his mother was black. Gaynor, who is half Barbadian, gave birth to her first child at the age of 16—and a year later, Tyrone had a little sister.
His mother raised her children alone, as their father soon left the family. Although it was not easy, according to Tyrone’s recollections, she never pressured him or tried to control him. When Tyrone was diagnosed with ADHD, Gaynor reassured him that it was not a problem—he just had too much energy.
When Tyrone got older, his mother remarried, and he and his sister gained a stepfather and a little brother. Michael, his younger brother, had muscular dystrophy from birth and died in 2001 at the age of one. This devastated the family, and soon after, Gaynor moved with her children to the village of Hibaldstone in Scunthorpe. The area turned out to be unsafe: when Tyrone was 8 years old, someone tried to stab him with a screwdriver, and his mother was nearly killed with a piece of broken glass.
As a child, the future artist was withdrawn, aloof, but observant. When asked a question, Tyrone would respond vaguely, and if left alone, he would almost always remain silent. Because of this, his peers gave him the nickname Slowthai, which he later adopted as his stage name.
